"This recipe for a Chocolate Layer Cake was on the back of a hand drawn card given to Lt. Thomas F. Burkhart of Altoona, PA for his birthday May 6, 1945 in Zentsuji POW camp. Lt Burkhart was captured on Bataan and spent 3 ½ years as a POW. The milk, chocolate, raisins, coffee, and sugar came out of the Red Cross boxes they occasionally received. It is noted that the list of ingredients is 'per man' with 5 men participating. As mentioned in his journals, quite often Tom was the baker of these concoctions. There were dozens of recipes collected in one journal."
